PRIMIGRAVIDA

Primigravida is a woman who is pregnant for the first time.
A personal story about my debut into motherhood as an immigrant and without the “village to raise the children” To provide a safe, healthy environment for children. This requires an environment where multiple people (the “villagers”) care for a child, including parents, siblings, extended family members, neighbors, and community members. All these ‘villagers' may provide direct care to the children and support the parents in looking after their children. However, the village, in my case as a new immigrant, was dissipated and fragmented, and I felt increasingly isolated and ashamed to ask for help from others. Family breakdown, economic pressures, long working hours, and increased mobility have all contributed to families feeling less connected to extended family members and others around them in today’s society in North America. Inherent in the concept of the village is the notion that caring for children is a shared responsibility amongst many. In this film, I explore the idea of the absent village, winter isolation, and postpartum depression.
